The story of Our Lady of Lourdes & St Bernadette’s Church in Larbert is one of faith, resilience, and dedication. It reflects the journey of a Catholic community that, from modest beginnings, has grown into a vibrant parish serving generations in central Scotland.
As the Catholic population of Larbert began to grow in the early 20th century — especially due to local industrial development — the need for a dedicated place of worship became increasingly clear. In response, a building was designed in 1931 by J. N. Scott & A. Lorne, originally intended to serve as a parish hall. However, this hall quickly became the main place of worship when plans for a larger, permanent church were postponed.
By the 1950s, it was decided that the original building would be adapted and retained as the main church.
Modest in scale but rich in spirit, it has served as the heart of Catholic life in Larbert ever since. Over the decades, the church has undergone a number of important developments:
Outside, the grounds include a cherished Marian Grotto, first built in 1934—the same year the parish began. It was later refurbished in 1984 to mark the parish’s Golden Jubilee, and recently enhanced by local parishioners, showcasing the ongoing devotion and creative talent of the community.
Throughout its history, the parish has been shaped by dedicated clergy, committed volunteers, and countless faithful families. It has witnessed baptisms, weddings, confirmations, funerals, and moments of deep personal prayer. Every chapter of its story is marked by a desire to be a living witness to Christ in the local area.
Today, under the pastoral care of Fr Ajeesh George, Our Lady of Lourdes & St Bernadette’s continues to be a place of welcome, prayer, and service. The church remains deeply committed to the message of the Gospel, the celebration of the sacraments, and the building of a compassionate community rooted in love and tradition.
A Living Legacy
From its humble beginnings as a temporary hall to its present role as a spiritual home, the church stands as a symbol of enduring faith. Every stone, every improvement, and every prayer offered within its walls tells the story of a community united in Christ—and inspired by Our Lady and St Bernadette.
