Laudato Si

Laudato Si’ – Care for Our Common Home

Laudato Si’ is a groundbreaking encyclical letter written by Pope Francis in 2015. Its title comes from the Canticle of the Sun by St Francis of Assisi, meaning “Praise be to You.” This powerful document calls on all people of goodwill, not just Catholics, to care for our planet and each other.

Pope Francis reminded us that the earth is our common home, a precious gift from God. Yet, it is suffering due to pollution, climate change, overconsumption, and disregard for the poor. Laudato Si’ teaches that everything is connected: the way we treat nature reflects how we treat people—especially the vulnerable and marginalised.

At its heart, Laudato Si’ is about integral ecology—a way of living that respects creation, promotes justice, and recognizes the spiritual dimension of environmental care. The pope urges individuals, communities, and governments to rethink their lifestyles, economies, and responsibilities to one another.

Key Themes of Laudato Si’:

  • The Earth as God’s creation – not a resource to exploit, but a home to cherish.
  • Everything is connected – the environment, the poor, and future generations.
  • Environmental justice – care for the poor must go hand-in-hand with care for the planet.
  • A call to conversion – spiritual, cultural, and ecological renewal is needed.
  • Action and responsibility – practical steps, both personal and global, matter.

Why It Matters Today

In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis speaks not as a scientist or politician, but as a spiritual leader and pastor. He invites us to rediscover a sense of wonder, humility, and gratitude for creation—and to act in love and solidarity with others. The encyclical continues to inspire movements in parishes, schools, and communities worldwide to live more simply and sustainably.
